Singapore Sling

The Merlion, is the trademark symbol of Singapore. It is a statue with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. According to the Singapore Tourism Board's publicity campaign, the Merlion recalls the story of the legendary Sang Nila Utama, who saw a lion while hunting on the island, en route to Malacca. The island eventually became the sea port of Temasek, a precursor to Singapore. (Source: Wikipedia)

I am not a fan of animals being put in cages. Made to eat food that is not earned. I last remember having gone to a zoo in 1993, in Ahmedabad. It isn't the best in the world. And it was quite revolting to see animals being caged. I can't imagine what would happen to me if I were put in a 10*10 cell for the rest of my life. Would almost certainly go insane.

The respite is the fact that the Singapore Zoo has been built such that the animals have a wider enclosure. You could see quite a few animals taking walks around their "home". They have also created a "natural" environment for them (or atleast appears natural to mere mortals like me!).

The night safari, comparatively, was a disappointment. The lions, supposed to be nocturnal, were in such deep slumber that a bomb may not have made a difference!

However, the good part of the night safari was the Fire Show done by what appeared to be dudes and dudesses, dressed like tribals....and playing with fire!

Chinatown, apart from its standard Red and Golden hue, had an amazing array of brightly coloured doors and windows that looked wonderful.

The underwater fish aquarium was nice. But still, the fishes should be in their natural habitat out in the sea, not here!

We also visited the standard touristy attractions of Clarke Quay and Boat Quay, Little India and Arab Street. For some godforsaken reason, I can't seem to upload any more snaps! So if the Blogger Gods do allow me, will post some more snaps.

Thank you Blogger Gods!

Thanks for sharing the pics. I am too against caging animals and birds. nothing like seeing them in the wild where they belong.

Did you take the pics with zebras?

Looks like you had fun! Do post more pics though.

On the animals in the cages thing, it's kind of sad. I am not quite opposed to having them in the zoo as long as they are treated humanely. And caging them is not very humane. they should at least be kept so that they can walk aroudn freely. The reason I say we should have the zoos is because it's educational and yes, man has to make some animals suffer for education.

Nice snaps Anand...Ekta did mention hubby dear was going ot upload the rest..Blogger does have issues with photo uploading..

Anyways, I feel the same about animals being caged...I also hate fishes in the aquarium...People say tht fish doe snot need more water or lots of space but I hate the very concept of keeping something in my clutches....

i've never been to the singapore zoo ..hahahaha....i heard a different story about the merlion. someone was sailing..and saw a creature that look like a mermaid and 1/2 lion.
therefore, it's called merlion (mermaid lion) i like to go boating at night around the quay :D i don't really miss singapore too much. only the food

Aditi said...

I like the picture of the zebra a lot.. and I agree, zoos sicken me for those very reason but atleast foreign zoos are better then indian zoos where they seemed to be neglected (as no one ever goes to the zoos) and in a tiny cage

I hate animals being caged too.. I have had numerous pets in ym life.. More then dozen rabbits, dogs, cats, a tiny turtle, squirrel.. But none of them were caged.. Ya ya.. Tell me I lived in a Zoo myself.. ;) Dislike of caging animals is also the reason why we never had birds..

I find most zoos repulsive.. But i guess from a educational perspectibve zoos are inevitable.. Good to see that there are more zoos coming up where animals live in considerably open places..

The Fire Show seemed to be quite a show.. Im plannign to visit Singapore soon..

Loved the wide open spaces in the Singapore zoo, as well as the animal and bird show at the Jurong bird park. I remember going with my aunt and sis into the bats enclosure during the night safari, and one HUUGE bat spread its, wings, almost florescent in the moonlight... we forgot all decorum to be silent and SCREAMED our lungs out and ran!

Hey cool summer and cool pics, but like u said I also hate caging animals, I was once at a zoo and saw this lion caged and he was so restless, just walking up and down, up and down the cage, I mean I stood there for about 30mins and he didnt pause for a second, I felt so bad imagining what that animal was going thru.

Since that time I hvnt been to a zoo again.

Will be waiting for da rest of the pics, when almitety blogger agrees. hehehe!

I always wanted to see those painted guys blowing fire in air. Dunno if I ever will get a chance.

And I agree with you about animals being caged. Precisely the very reason I hate fish acquiruims. That is so sadist, IMHO.

Gaurav Jain said...

I'm also very much against animals being caged in zoos, esp. the way they are done in India. Seems like you had a nice time in Singapore Zoo (have heard a lot about it on Discovery and Animal Planet).

ahan, i see you have added more pictures to this post. Very nice ones. The night pics are awesome. Did you use any filters? I was hoping you would post a picture of the building with multi colored windows on Clarke Quak. i thought it was a pretty sight. I love the fireshow. What is it called in singapore? They are very common in hawaii and are called the Fire knife dancers.

I hate animals and fishes being caged. But let's take a step back and think. If we humans were considerate and kind, stopped dumping to the bay, stopped cutting down the forests, these species would not be endangered and on the verge of extinction and there would have been no need to cage them to help them survive. I would support any zoo/aquarium that invests time and money in preserving and taking care of the species that are endangered or are on the verge of extinction (thanks to the thoughtless and selfish actions of the humans) and at the same time, i am against caging and displaying these animals for only the the purpose of show and money.

Take care

"I am not a fan of animals being put in cages"...
so true....Anand

honestly i too don't agree. Some fifteen years ago, WE then lived in Pune, and i would take my son( two years then) regularly to a zoo there.

One day i found the elephant kept there in tears. Visitors were throwing things at it.....very pathetic scene

The zookeeper told me that the elephnat has some problem withhis right foot and we cannot do anything about it ...

after about a month it was in the papers that the elephant has died!
that was my last visit to a zoo...never after...

sorry for this comment ...could not stop myself.

It seems god wanted one creature in this beautiful world to use his brains and be rationale,so he chose humanbeings and gifted them with thinking powers, sad we use them for hurting others,be it fellow humanbeings or animals,I hate to see them caged in the zoo.
Beautiful pictures, reminds of me of pictures sent by a friend before, specially those vibrant colourful windows and doors. I have been here before, but commenting for the first time:)
